Police have charged 38 people for ‘crash for cash’ insurance fraud offences in Cumbria
The investigation, a joint operation between Cumbria Constabulary and the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB), has seen detectives investigate numerous people for conspiring to defraud motor insurance companies for collisions that allegedly occurred in the county between 2010 and 2014.
38 people have all been charged in connection with the offences and appeared before North Cumbria Magistrates Court on 28 July 2015.
Ben Fletcher, Director of the IFB, said: “There is a perception that ‘crash for cash’ insurance fraud is just confined to the big cities but this investigation demonstrates that this is a national problem which demands a strong, co-ordinated industry response.
“Working in partnership with insurers and police forces across the UK we’re currently co-ordinating 110+ operations into organised fraud valued in excess of £120 million. Our unique access to industry-wide data combined with our expertise in developing quality evidence packages means we can support police forces to take enforcement action to disrupt the activities of insurance fraudsters.”
